Fit, active and healthy seniors: celebrating Seniors Month in Ontario

June is Seniors Month in Ontario, a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of older adults who have shaped our province into what it is today. This year’s theme, “Fit, Active and Healthy Seniors,” highlights the importance of supporting aging Ontarians through wellness, social connection and education.

Whether it’s a walking group, a peer support session, or a friendly check-in, small efforts can make a big impact in reducing loneliness and improving mental and physical health as we age.

The mental health needs of Ontario seniors

Mental health is just as important in our later years as it is at any other stage of life, yet it’s often overlooked. In Ontario, it’s estimated that between 289,000 and 680,000 seniors (17 to 30 per cent) are affected by mental health challenges like depression or anxiety. (Canadian Institute for Health Information, 2022)

Many seniors experience grief, social isolation, chronic illness and changes in living situations, which can all take a toll on emotional well-being. Access to community supports and programs is essential to help seniors live with dignity and purpose.
