Learn about Inclusion Support Services through Krista Sibbilin, Manager at CMHA Waterloo Wellington. Follow the ‘Faces of CMHA’ series for a glimpse into the lives of the people who spend each day working to make a difference at the Canadian Mental Health Association:
A preschooler with developmental delays, a toddler with anxiety, a school age child experiencing aggressive outbursts, when young children experience such struggles, supports are available. This is where our CMHA WW Inclusion Support Services Team can help.
At CMHA WW our Inclusion Support Services Team is made up of Resource Consultants and Social Development Consultants who support children attending licenced child care and before/after school programs. Our Resource Consultants support children with developmental needs and our Social Development Consultants support children with social-emotional and mental health needs.
There are presently 49 licenced child care programs and 46 before/after school programs in Guelph-Wellington supported by CMHA WW Resource Consultants and Social Development Consultants.
Child care educators, with permission from parents, reach out to our Inclusion Support Services Team when they observe a child that may need support. Together the Consultants and child care educators assess a child’s skills, as well as develop and implement goals in an individual support plan to meet the needs of the child in both the child care and home.
Early experiences matter. The quality of the early care, education, and intervention provided to young children not only impacts their experiences now but directly contributes to their future successes in life. (Adapted from ZERO TO THREE Critical Competencies for Infant-Toddler Educator)(Dean, LeMoine & Mayoral 2015)
As the Manager for the Inclusion Support Services Team at CMHA, I am proud of all that the team does. The ISS team is a caring, compassionate, committed, patient and flexible group of people. Their commitment is demonstrated daily through the positive contributions they make in the lives of educators, children and families.
