Letter from CMHA WW to our Community on ending Racism
Jun 1, 2021
The recent discovery of mass graves of children at a residential school in BC is a stark reminder of racism in Canada. It has also been a year since the Police murder of George Floyd in the US, which sparked an international movement of awareness regarding systemic racism. These events remind us of the work that Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington needs to do as an organization, and as part of the healthcare system, to end racism.
Over the last year, we have been reflecting and learning, sharing stories, building relationships with community leaders, and forming a stronger and more sustainable Equity, Diversity & Inclusion plan. We are acknowledging the ways we have contributed to systemic racism in the mental health and addictions healthcare system and acknowledge that we must improve and take action to address this.
At CMHA WW, the journey of self-reflection, awareness, action and improvement has been challenging and hopeful. We have a lot of work yet to do, and we are committed to working every day to end racism, end oppression and build bright, hopeful futures for our clients, staff and community. We make this promise, and we expect to be held accountable.
