On November 4, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., community members are invited to gather at Spring Mill Distillery’s Ward Bar for Stach’ the Stigma, a free community-driven event recognizing Movember, the annual global movement taking place in November that raises awareness and funds to support men’s health, including mental health, suicide prevention, and men’s well-being.
Mental health challenges among men are common, yet many do not seek support when they are struggling. Too often, this can contribute to social isolation, substance use concerns, unhealthy relationship patterns, and crisis situations.
Created as a kickoff to Movember, the evening is rooted in a vision of building a community where conversations about men’s mental health are welcomed, supported, and free from stigma.
Research shows that men account for nearly 75% of suicide deaths in Canada, making connection, belonging, and access to support more important than ever. Strong social relationships are among the most significant protective factors for mental health, and creating spaces where men can talk openly about their experiences can encourage them to seek help before reaching a crisis point.
The evening will feature an engaging panel discussion with community leaders who are passionate about encouraging authenticity, resilience, and mental wellness:
· John Shearer, Founder of Kickstart Men’s Therapy
· Kris Phippen, Founder of Phlippens
· Alex Barr, Founder of iSurvived Foundation
Guests can also look forward to:
· Mental health information and resources
· Opportunities to connect with others in a supportive environment
· A “Make Your Own Burger” experience generously sponsored by Harvey’s
“Stach’ the Stigma is about creating space for honest conversations and reminding people that no one has to face life’s challenges alone,” said the organizing committee. “As we kick off Movember, we want to encourage men to check in with themselves and with one
another. When men feel supported, connected, and comfortable sharing their experiences, they become more resilient. We hope this event inspires more conversations, strengthens relationships, and helps create a community where reaching out for support is seen as a sign of strength.”
Attendance is free, but spots are limited. Community members are encouraged to register early to secure their place at Stach’ the Stigma: A Community Conversation on Men’s Mental Health — Our Charity.
The idea started as a conversation among a small group of community members and has evolved into a collaborative initiative made possible through the efforts of a dedicated planning committee, including:
Andy Veilleux, Ayrn Lahey, Catriona Forbes, Devyn Orpana, Jay Whitelaw, John Shearer, Jide Atiola, Megan Brady Graham, and Tracey Curtis.
Research consistently shows that supportive homes, workplaces, schools, sports teams, and communities make it more likely that men will talk openly about their mental health and seek support when needed. By bringing people together for meaningful conversation and connection, organizers hope to help build the kind of social networks that serve as a safety net during difficult times.
This event would not be possible without the incredible support of our community partners and sponsors. The organizing committee extends its sincere gratitude to Spring Mill Distillery’s Ward Bar for generously providing the event space, Harvey’s for sponsoring the Burger Bar experience, GuelphToday for serving as the event’s media sponsor, and Atiola Real Estate and Kickstart Men’s Therapy for their support as a contributing sponsors. Their commitment to fostering community well-being and supporting conversations around mental health has helped make this event a reality.
Together, we can create a community where conversations about men’s mental health are not only accepted but encouraged. Because sometimes a simple conversation, a shared experience, or a connection with others can make all the difference.
