The Healing Power of Music
Jun 7, 2016
A young man shares why he started writing lyrics and how he is working to combat stigma associated with mental illness.
#1. How and when did you start writing songs?
I started writing songs in 2006. The beat spoke to me and I had to put something heartfelt onto it. I was dealing with own mental health issues and was inspired by music, it made sense of things for me. Writing music alleviated pressure for me, it relieved me of stress. Writing refreshed my thought patterns by sharing my emotions.
#2. What inspired you to write your songs?
There are many things that inspired me to write songs: the struggles of other people, how challenging life can be at times and sometimes you need an escape and thats what music is for me.
#3. What do you hope people get out of listening to your music?
I hope that people can find some form of enlightenment or realization when dealing with hardships when they listen to my music.
#4. Why is it important for you to share your music?
Its important for me to share my music because if I can relate to a listener, an artist holds the power to change your mind about something. I want to show people a different light on the road they are travelling on, a sense of positivity in a sometimes negative world.
#5. What can we do to combat stigma/raise awareness about mental illness?
I think we can combat stigma or raise awareness about mental illness by being heard, expressing yourself in a passionate and intimate way. By sharing you could ease someone elses problems, show them how to improve it and persevere, it can be how you reach someone.
