Faces of CMHA: Erin Davis, Clinical Supervisor ABA

I am proud to lead a team of professionals who are some of the most highly skilled, compassionate, dedicated, creative and FUN people I have met in the field of ABA.  Their work is demanding and stressful, and as a field, there is often significant turnover in front line staff, yet they bring enthusiasm and innovation to their roles every day.  Without this team, my role and this program would not be what it is today!

#1. What is involved in your role?

As a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) I oversee all clinical aspects of the Ontario Autism Program here at CMHA. I supervise and mentor a team of clinicians who use the science of ABA to work directly with children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (and their families) in their homes and in community locations.

#2. Why did you become involved in Autism and Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)?

I was completing my undergrad degree in psychology at York U and one of my professors was heavily involved in the ABA/autism field.  She was an excellent mentor and helped me get my first job working as an Instructor Therapist with young children with autism.  I immediately fell in love with the science of ABA and thrived on helping children and  families achieve their goals.  Over the next few years, I completed my Masters degree in ABA, passed my board certification exam, and began supervising and training new staff coming into the field.

#3. What brought you to CMHA?

I had been doing similar work with preschool aged children for several years and wanted to expand my scope of practice so I moved to CMHA where the program focuses on older children and adolescents.  We get to work on a huge variety of goals with our clients, such as riding the bus, preparing for university, and dating skills, which keeps my job fun and exciting.

#4. What do you enjoy about working at CMHA?

One of my favourite aspects of my role is having the opportunity to be both a leader and a clinician in a highly respected organization.  I am able to mentor students and employees, lead and motivate a team and have input and influence on operational and strategic decisions within CMHA all while continuing to practice the science that I love.  Seeing the results of the clinical work my team is doing in this community is so rewarding.

#5. What are you particularly proud of during your time at CMHA?

I am proud to lead a team of professionals who are some of the most highly skilled, compassionate, dedicated, creative and FUN people I have met in the field of ABA.  Their work is demanding and stressful, and as a field, there is often significant turnover in front line staff, yet they bring enthusiasm and innovation to their roles every day.  Without this team, my role and this program would not be what it is today!
