CMHA supports Pink Shirt Day

On February 28, individuals and organizations across the country will come together to celebrate Pink Shirt Day, an annual anti-bullying campaign.

Bullying is a major problem in our schools, workplaces, homes, and online. Pink Shirt Day aims to raise awareness of these issues, as well as raise funds to support programs that foster children’s healthy self-esteem.

This year’s focus is on cyberbullying: using online and mobile technology to harm other people in a deliberate, repeated and hostile manner. Cyberbullying can include harassment, impersonation, outing, cyberstalking, and denigration, and can often feel even more overwhelming than traditional bullying, because access to a target is 24/7. Being cyberbullied can lead to depression and anxiety.

In Waterloo Region, proceeds from Pink Shirt Day t-shirt sales — a partnership with the Waterloo Region Record — support CMHA Waterloo Wellington’s WAYVE (Wellness Acceptance Youth Voices Empowerment) initiative.

Since 2001, WAYVE has empowered youth to become advocates for mental health and social justice issues, raising awareness about bullying, racism, homophobia, and relationship abuse. WAYVE operates on the firm belief that youth need to be involved in the solution to addressing youth issues, because they are the ones directly involved. The program provides teens with the opportunity to make decisions, delegate, mentor, and motivate others, creating and developing leaders of tomorrow.
