Welcome to the Infant and Child Development Program at the Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington Branch (CMHA WW). We use a family centred approach. The pivotal role of the family is recognized and respected.
Babies start learning about their world at birth by looking, hearing, tasting, touching, smelling and moving. This learning generally follows a predictable path. New abilities are acquired in about the same order for most children. For infants and children whose developmental progress may be at risk or delayed, our Infant and Child Development Consultants (I&CD) will provide parents with the information they need to help their child learn to his or her potential.
Preterm Pathway — The preterm pathways service is for children who are born prematurely and are referred for intervention. The purpose of the care pathways is to:
- Provide each child with an appropriate level of service
- Ensure that each child’s development is monitored for developmental delays at appropriate intervals
- To offer consistency in the monitoring and intervention offered to pre-term children across all I&CD programs within the Centre-West Region.
Routine screening will take place every 4-6 months at the CMHA office to monitor their progress. Your child’s development will be screened at specific intervals determined by the degree of pre-maturity, medical history and family history. Children demonstrating delays will be offered more intensive service in addition to their routine screenings. Your I&CD consultant will review specific details with you to ensure that the program is meeting your needs.
Developmental Monitoring Clinics — You and your child will meet with a I&CD consultant at the CMHA office. Routine screening will take place every 4-6 months at the CMHA office to monitor your child’s progress. Their development will be screened at specific intervals determined by their background information, developmental profile and medical history. Children who are demonstrating delays will be offered a more intensive service. Your I&CD consultant will review specific details with you to ensure that the program is meeting your needs.
Home Visiting — You will meet with your I&CD consultant in your home at a time you both agree works well. You will work together to identify goals related to your child’s development or your family and brainstorm strategies to meet those goals. You will review these goals regularly.
