Why do I Volunteer? By M. Tam

When I was younger, I spent a lot of time wondering how I could best spend the rest of my life. I thought relentlessly about what it would mean to contribute to something I believed in, but I had yet to discover what exactly that was.

What I have recently realized — with the help of CMHA – is that there are thousands of moments in life where events only make sense in retrospect. There was no way to know the experiences that would guide the course of my life and change the way I both see, and function within my society.

These are the experiences that would ultimately lead me to volunteering with CMHA.

Through volunteering with CMHA, I’ve learned so much about what I admire and what I aspire to contribute. Most importantly, CMHA has taught me the importance of being yourself, finding yourself, and how to prioritize mental health.

None of these discoveries would have been possible without the entire team at CMHA, who trust in my ability to contribute to their organization, the other volunteers who have taught me so much about life and friendship, and all the individuals who trust us with their stories – there is no group of people that inspire me more than you.

It’s always been really important to me to love what I do, so I’d like to thank CMHA for helping me to discover who I am, what I value, and how I can combine these two things to create a life and community that I am proud of. They have opened so many avenues to effect change, and to reach as many people as possible.

And to my younger self, we have finally found something to believe in – and not only in retrospect.
