Why do I volunteer? By E. Porcellato #NVW2019

I absolutely love volunteering with CMHA Waterloo Wellington! I chose this organization because I am passionate about mental health initiatives and I have heard nothing but good things about CMHA programs and staff. I also love that they offer a variety of different opportunities that interest me, which would make the transition between positions an easy task.

I currently volunteer with the “Through the Eyes of a Child” program, it has been a truly rewarding experience. It brings a smile to my face when the children we work with are excited to see us. I enjoy the company of these children, other volunteers, and the group facilitators that work alongside me. I believe that this program would not be possible without the help of volunteers and I like knowing that I can be a part of something bigger than myself.

This experience has taught me the importance of selflessness and the power of small change. Prior to this position, I had no experience with volunteering for a consistent period of time. Now I understand how much of a difference that volunteering can have on my mental state, I always leave the group feeling energized and refreshed. I have also learned that although giving my time for a few hours a week may not seem like much, it gives community members the opportunity to participate in potentially life-changing programs. From my perspective, volunteering is beneficial for everyone involved.

I am very lucky to be a part of this incredible organization!
