Stories of Support: McFadden’s Movement

Three years ago, Guelph Storm alum Garrett McFadden had an idea. He wanted to start a grass roots project to change, help, and develop mental health among young athletes. During his time with the Storm McFadden along with our Youth Engagement Facilitator Jessica Schumaker spoke about mental health to numerous students and sports teams. McFadden talked about the pressures of sport, but also the significance of talking about mental health in hopes of changing the stigma surrounding athletes. McFadden was directly affected by the loss of a close family friend back in 2011, and wanted to talk about his personal experience. Schumaker talked about mental health and the resources available in the community. McFadden attended Acadia University this past year, but thanks to the Guelph Storm Ambassadors the Movement was able to continue.

This past weekend, McFadden’s Movement held their third annual road hockey tournament – they had a record number of teams and raised $20,000 for WES for Youth and CMHA WW. McFadden’s Movement has raised $46,000 throughout the past three years! We are so proud of Garrett and the Guelph Storm for their dedication to mental health awareness and fundraising.
