Ride Don’t Hide Ambassador Spotlight: Mandy Bujold

CMHA Waterloo Wellington is pleased to announce Mandy Bujold as an Ambassador for Ride Don’t Hide 2018.

An Olympic boxer and two-time Pan American Games gold medallist from Kitchener, Ontario, Bujold is the longest-reigning Canadian champion in history. She sees the comparison between mental health and her outlet.

“There are a lot of similarities between sport and mental health,” says Bujold. “Even though you’re in the ring with an opponent, you’re really competing against yourself.”

She adds that getting the right support in those moments of difficulty is extremely important, pointing to her experience in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, competing at her first Olympic Games. Bujold, considered a strong contender for a medal at the Games, ended up falling ill midway through her competition, getting hospitalized before her quarterfinal bout.

“You just try to figure out, why me? Why has this happened now?” says Bujold. “If I didn’t have those people and that support that I needed from my family and support staff that I work with, it would’ve been a lot longer process for me to actually be able to put that in a good place.”

Bujold joins Waterloo’s Jeff Emmerson and Cambridge’s Shae Dupuy as CMHA Waterloo Wellington’s 2018 Ride Don’t Hide Ambassadors, taking part in the ride on Sunday, June 24th, 2018 in St. Clements.

“Ride Don’t Hide is an absolutely amazing initiative,” she says. “To get out there and to be talking about mental health, to be part of something that’s a big movement and something we need to be talking about, it’s just an honour to be a part of.”

The largest mental health bike ride in Canada, Ride Don’t Hide celebrates its seventh year this year, coinciding with the Canadian Mental Health Association’s 100th anniversary. The Ride has generated nearly $6-million towards mental health programs and services in communities across Canada.
