National Volunteer Week is April 15th-21st. Read CMHA WW volunteer Jeweley’s story about why she’s passionate about mental health and giving back:

I decided to volunteer with the Canadian Mental Health Association because I wanted to become more involved with my community, especially in the mental health field. I am currently pursuing a career in counselling, so I wanted to take advantage of getting involved and helping people through CMHA programs. I am passionate about psychology and learning how to help others based on their individual needs.

What I have learned from volunteering with CMHA is by working together as a team, we can really make a difference in helping those in need. I have made new friendships by volunteering with CMHA, and have found that they have similar goals, values, and interests as me, which I am thankful for. The teen CBT mindfulness group inspires me each week, because I know we are creating a warm, safe environment for these teens to come, share their struggles, and receive help through it all. I can see a difference in each of them, and it makes me want to become a better person myself.

Through studying and volunteering, it has further confirmed for me the passion I have for psychology and the impact I can have on other people’s lives, especially those who are struggling with mental health challenges. I am a strong advocate for mental health services and believe that the stigma behind mental health disorders needs to change. Volunteering with CMHA has been an impactful experience, and I look forward to being a part of future volunteer opportunities with them!
