June is Seniors’ Month: CMHA WW Brings Awareness Of Depression & Elder Abuse
Jun 5, 2019
Depression is the most common mental health concern for seniors and it is NOT a part of normal aging. The Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington is bringing awareness about mental health and factors that can lead to depression including elder abuse and what can be done to improve seniors mental health.
What are the factors to promote good mental health in seniors?
- LET THEM TALK about their feelings
- This is a generation raised with – pull yourself up by your bootstraps, don’t share your business
- Remind them that it is okay to feel sad
- This cohort does sustain multiple losses;, perhaps loss of a spouse, friends, health , home—its normal to feel sad about these things
- Reminding them that talking about feelings is not a character flaw.
- Being active, able to participate in things you enjoy with people you enjoy who do not deplete your energy. Surround yourself with positive influences, keep your mind busy-find the things that bring you meaning and purpose for your identity.
Elder Abuse
Depression can be both a contributing factor and effect of abuse; it often leads to isolation, which is a significant risk factor for abuse. Similarly, elder abuse survivors are more likely to experience depression or anxiety. Elder abuse can take many forms including:
Physical: Causing physical harm; hitting, kicking, pushing or inappropriate use of drugs or restraints
Psychological/Emotional: humiliation, threats, insults, isolation, controlling behaviour
Sexual: Any sexual contact without consent
Financial abuse
Neglect
The World Health Organization has defined Elder Abuse as “a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person”. 1 in 10 seniors experiences some type of elder abuse, usually from a trusted person in a position of power.
Raising awareness about Elder Abuse and the signs and symptoms of seniors at risk is an important first step in preventing Elder Abuse. Having a discussion with caregivers, family members and your senior loved ones helps open lines of communication. Caregiver burnout is a high risk factor associated with Elder Abuse. It is important to have conversations with your senior loved one’s health care providers and all those that participate in their caregiving to help keep appraised of anything potentially concerning.
Legislation in Canada is in place to protect older adults against Elder Abuse. Elder Abuse is a violation of elder citizen’s rights and freedoms, which is a crime in Canada punishable by jail time and fines, depending on the circumstances of the crime. Being aware of the signs of Elder Abuse and being vigilant about reporting concerns can help stop Elder abuse and prevent future cases.
It is important to remember Depression is treatable. Depression is not a character flaw, it can happen to anyone at any age, no matter what your accomplishments are. The right treatment and support can allow you to feel better and live a vibrant happy life.
