On Tuesday, April 10th, CMHA Waterloo Wellington’s Senior Director of Services, Helen Fishburn, joined Swap Talk with Rob Dutton and McKim Ecclestone to talk about Big White Wall, changing attitudes around mental health, and Ride Don’t Hide.

On attitudes around mental health:
“The stigma is being reduced — there’s no question. People are much more comfortable talking about their mental health, generally speaking,” says Fishburn. “We still have a lot more work to do to reduce stigma, especially around addictions.”

On Big White Wall:
“It’s an online platform where people can get 24/7 support,” says Fishburn. “They can log onto this website; they can talk to other peers on the website who are struggling with their own mental health and addiction issues; they can talk to a master’s level therapist online; they can watch videos; they can do an eight-week program on things like how to reduce stress, how to reduce drinking, how to improve your coping skills… it’s a phenomenal program.”

On Ride Don’t Hide:
“It’s actually a national campaign that CMHAs across Canada operate. We do a beautiful ride in the country, and there’s all different lengths… It’s all about raising awareness and raising funds so we can provide more local support to people in Waterloo-Wellington,” says Fishburn. “It’s a really fun day.”
