June is Seniors’ Month. We have been sharing information about seniors’ mental health and elder abuse. Today, we highlight our Seniors’ Services System Navigator, Shannon Mayhew.

I am an advocate in a moment of need, sometimes it is being a voice, other times it is being a friend. Navigating the health care system can be trying at the best of times, never mind when you are in place of vulnerability. We walk with them and hold a hand as needed.

What is involved in your role?

System navigation for seniors is our primary role, assisting senior’s link to the right supports at the right time. I always tell my clients I am the jack of all trades, and master of none. It is varied, as everyone is different and in a different place in life.

Why did you become involved in the mental health field?

I have always been drawn to psycho-geriatrics, it is a fascinating field. Through my studies at college and university, it was always my topic of choice.

What brought you to CMHA?

I was working in acute care up north. I took a chance on a part time senior’s intensive case manager position in Dufferin, which lead to covering a temp leave in the Intensive Geriatric Services Worker role, to my permanent position. Best chance I ever took!

Have you always worked in mental health?

I would have said no, but as I look back on my career, I started as a candy striper at KW hospital on the transition ward, many moons ago, and fell in love with those in a place of transition. Assisting and supporting seniors became my passion.

How do you support people in your role at CMHA?

By being an advocate in a moment of need, sometimes it is being a voice, other times it is being a friend. Navigating the health care system can be trying at the best of times, never mind when you are in place of vulnerability. We walk with them and hold a hand as needed.

What are you proud of during your time at CMHA?

My team, it is a challenging role with many ups and downs and the IGSW team has always been there for each other, whether it’s a shoulder to cry on, a good laugh, or resource sharing. The IGSW team has been nothing but a pleasure to be part of!!
