CMHA WW’s Helen Fishburn Talks Low Risk Drinking Guidelines

With BBQ season well underway CMHA WW’s Senior Director of Services Helen Fishburn joined Swap Talk with Rob Dutton and McKim Ecclestone on 101 the Grand to talk about low risk drinking guidelines.

You may be wondering, are there low risk drinking guidelines? When does drinking become a problem?

The low risk drinking guidelines set out by the Canadian government are, for women no more than two drinks at any one time with no more than ten drinks in a week. For men, it is no more than three drinks at any one time with no more than fifteen drinks in a week. Within this you need to have a couple of days a week where no drinking is involved. Moderation is very important when it comes to low rick drinking guidelines.

Drinking is a personal choice. If you choose to drink, these guidelines can help you decide when, where, why and how.

Safer drinking tips:

Do not drink when you are:

“The other thing about drinking is it is very tied to your mental wellness and research shows the more you drink the poorer your mental health is because there is social isolation, depression, conflict…so it is a really good to keep that in mind and keep drinking to a minimum…within the low risk guidelines.” says CMHA WW’s Senior Director of Services Helen Fishburn “If you are worried and you’re not sure or if you’re worried about someone you love…just call us, call us at Here 24/7 (1-844-437-3247 (HERE 247)) and we will walk you through some of the concerns you might have.”

The Big White Wall is an online platform that offers courses that can help you reduce your drinking. It also provides counselling techniques, stress reduction and connections with other people who are experiencing mental health issues –  for more information visit: bigwhitewall.com.
